The Carbon Cycle from North to South along the Galathea 3 Route
نویسندگان
چکیده
Air-sea exchange of CO2 is parameterized along the cruise track of Galathea 3 – a worldwide research expedition. A key parameter is the gas transfer velocity, which varies with wind speed. Wind speeds are measured continuously on board the research vessel. For selected areas, winds are also retrieved from Envisat ASAR images, as the ASAR senses small-scale waves at the sea surface generated by the local wind. A demonstration from the coastal up-welling zone of Peru shows that CO2 fluxes are numerically smaller when satellite winds, rather than ship measurements of the wind speed, are used to determine the gas transfer velocity. This difference is likely related to the presence of algae films at the sea surface of the cold and nutrient rich up-welling waters. Algae films have a damping effect on small-scale surface waves and are also believed to hamper air-sea CO2 transfers. Satellite wind maps may thus be better indicators of the gas transfer velocity than the wind speed at 10 m measured from ships or masts. The relationship between the wind and the CO2 transfer velocity will be investigated further from a combination of ship and satellite data obtained along the Galathea 3 route.

Investigating the Effects of Teleconnection Indices on Net Primary Production in the North of Iran’s Alborz Mountains
One of the main scientific topics on the effects of global climate change is to assess changes in the carbon cycle in rangelands. Net Primary Production (NPP) is an important component of this cycle, in terms of carbon storage, and a key indicator for assessing the ecosystem function. This research aimed to investigate the correlation between NPP and ocean-atmospheric oscillations, monthly and ...

متن کاملHow energy and water availability constrain vegetation water-use along the North Australian Tropical Transect
Energy and water availability were identified as the first order controls of evapotranspiration(ET) in ecohyrodrology. With a ~1,000 km precipitation gradient and distinct wet-dry climate, the North Australian Tropical Transect (NATT) was well suited for evaluating how energy andwater availabilities constrain water use by vegetation, but has not been done yet. In this study,we addressed this que...
متن کاملRadiocarbon in dissolved organic carbon of the South Pacific Ocean
Marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) originates mainly from primary production using dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) that has young C ages. Paradoxically, the C age of deep DOC ranges from 4000 to 6400 C years, indicating that a portion of DOC survives multiple, deep ocean mixing cycles. Here we show that C ages of DOC from the deep South Pacific are equal to those from the deep north central...
